I got this Kundalini Yoga dvd by husband and wife team Ana Brett and Ravi Singh as an experiment. I used to avoid yoga like the plague. The “spaciness” of the whole thing was not something I was ready to embrace. I didn’t see myself chanting about gurus and becoming one with the earth and all that.
Doing this dvd was a big leap for me because apparently kundalini yoga is a bit different from other forms of yoga. It’s supposed to do wonderful things for your internal organs and help your body to “detox”. Well, my organs can always do with a tune up so I decided to give it a go.
The dvd starts with Ana Brett dancing which was ok by me. Then came the chanting and I fast forwarded!! The main workout was quite interesting. I’m not an absolute beginner ( I’ve dabbled a bit in the past) but I had to modify a lot of the moves at least a little.
Ana Brett demonstrates the poses with a voice over from both her and her husband. The cueing was excellent and I had no problems following what Ana was doing. The first time I tried the breath of fire, I felt lightheaded and nauseaous! It felt a little better the next time around. Good thing too because she does a lot of it. Incidentally, this dvd is not really for beginners but you can modify a lot if you need to.
The workout is done on a little pink rug in the middle of a brightly lit white studio. You can’t see any walls anywhere which gives the illusion of endless space. There are no windows and no potted plants, fake or otherwise.
I found this kudalini yoga dvd very interesting. I had to go a little out of my comfort zone to do it though, which is not a bad thing. I think I’ll try Kundalini Fat Free for beginners next. All in all, not a wasted experience.
